Workshop: Current Metadata Landscape in the Library World
Coordinated by Dr Getaneh Alemu, Cataloguing & Metadata Librarian, Southampton Solent University, United Kingdom
Day: 28th November 2017
Time: 14.00 – 17.00
Place: Tallinn University in Tallinn, Estonia - As Part of MTSR 2017
Number of Participants/Registration: TBA
Metadata is ubiquitous and it is raison d'être for libraries as it forms their core functions. Whether they use MARC, Dublin Core, MODS, METS, PREMIS, AACR-2, RDA, FRBR, Linked Data or BIBFRAME (standards/tools), the chief business of libraries is to describe the great diversity of information resources (print or electronic books, articles, reports, datasets, cultural heritage objects or artifacts) with metadata that reflects the heterogeneity inherent in users – hence the case for a mixed metadata approach that combines the best of standardised and user-generated metadata. Such metadata is pertinent in order to make information resources findable, discoverable and usable by users. In this regard, the emerging metadata principles of enriching, linking, openness and filtering (Alemu, 2014) play a paramount importance. This workshop aims to bring the current metadata landscape in libraries in context, with particular emphasis on emerging theory/principles and best practices covering:
- The theory of enriching and filtering.
- Metadata enriching through RDA (Hands on - The RDA Toolkit and implementation of RDA at Southampton Solent University)
- Metadata filtering through FRBR (practical issues that cataloguers face in FRBRising their catalogue).
- Metadata management (metadata quality, authority control and subject headings).
- Metadata systems, tools and applications (practical issues of e-books and database cataloguing).
MTSR’17 Doctoral Consortium Workshop for PhD Students
In view of developing the field of metadata, digital libraries, ontology and semantics research, MTSR’17 aims to host a Doctoral Consortium Workshop that brings together PhD students, professors and academics from the fields of library and information science and computer science. The aim of the workshop is to offer a closed forum for PhD students to present their ideas to experienced professors in the field and gain professional exposure, critique and feedback on their topics, methodologies, preliminary and future plans.
Submissions should be between 3000 to 4000 words (excluding the brief CV and list of references) and should include:
- Title of PhD topic.
- Abstract of PhD work which includes statement of the research problem, rationale for the choice of the topic and summary.
- Methodology – philosophical/theoretical framework, data collection methods and tools pertinent to the PhD research.
- Literature review – what has been done on the topic, by whom and using which methodology and linkage to your research – brevity and depth are required.
- Experiments, data analysis, preliminary result (if any).
- Future plans – what and how you aim to chart your way to the completion of the PhD?
- Expected contributions to knowledge and possible practical applications to the field of practice.
- Reference list in APA 6th Format.
A single page CV which includes name, University affiliation, professional experience, publications, if any, and name of supervisor(s).
Submission procedure
All submissions will be evaluated chiefly on its professional/scientific merit, depth of research topic and methodology, understanding of contemporary and emerging research landscape of digital information/technology infrastructure and clarity of writing.
Submissions will be peer-reviewed by the program committee members and by MTSR panel of professors. Selected candidates will be invited to present at MTSR 2017 in Tallinn University (10 minutes presentation and 10 minutes question and feedback). Students of accepted submissions will be asked to register to the Conference and will also pay conference registration fees.
Interested authors can submit to EasyChair
(https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=mtsr2017) under the Doctoral Consortium Workshop area.
Publication Opportunities
All accepted papers will be published open access at the CEUR-WS.org Workshop Proceedings (http://ceur-ws.org/).
After the workshop the Doctoral Consortium Panel will propose the best papers of the workshops to be submitted, as revised and extended version of the papers, to be published in a range of international journals, including the International Journal of Metadata, Semantics and Ontologies (Inderscience) and Program (Emerald).
Best Student Paper Award
Best student paper award sponsored by euroCRIS:
MTSR sponsors a paper competition to recognize excellence in a conference paper contribution whose primary author is a student (normally at a PhD or MRes level). The student is required to present the paper at the MTSR 2017 conference. Submissions are evaluated on their originality, scientific merits, structure, and clarity of composition.
Submissions on the Doctoral Consortium Workshop are considered for this award. For more information please see at http://www.mtsr-conf.org/
